After an energetic and steady week of racing in Turkey, Team KATUSHA ALPECIN come away from the final day with two top ten placings in the general classification, including Nathan Haas’ fine third place finish on the podium. Joining him in the top finishers was teammate neo-pro Matteo Fabbro in eighth overall.
Nathan Haas: The Tour of Turkey for us was super fun. The team performance today was excellent – really all week it was excellent. We end up with two guys in the top ten with me on the podium and I’m very happy about that. The guys put a lot of work in and it feels like we’ve put a foot in the right direction as we head toward the 2019 racing season.
The 54th Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey was won by Eduard Prades (Euskadi-Murias) on the same time (22:26:16) as second place finisher Alexey Lutsenko of Astana. A better finish in the final stage contributed to Prades earning the overall win. Haas was third at 4-seconds.
Bringing his neo-pro season to a conclusion on a high note with an eighth-place finish was a fitting final for Matteo Fabbro, 23, who has shown steady improvement all year with racing experience gained in the WorldTour.
Haas: It was a real highlight for me to see young Fabbro take 8th on GC. For a first-year rider like him, this is a real feather in his cap.
The final stage 6 into Istanbul was won by a late attack from Bora-hangrohe’s Sam Bennett who held six-seconds to Prades and Jempy Drucker of BMC.
Haas continued his philosophical reflection at year-end: We are well-aware of our short-fallings this season but we know the quality is there and we’re beginning to put those ingredients in the right mix. This week there was so much great energy around the team; it felt very good. We’re looking forward; we’re not looking back. We have so much class in this team and we’re really hungry for next year. We appreciate so much the fans that have stuck with us through this tough year and we can’t wait to do better for everybody.
