Tirreno-Adriatico. Špilak looks to future goals

The 52nd Tirreno-Adriatico stage race came to a conclusion on Tuesday with the final individual time trial. Team KATUSHA ALPECIN’S Simon Špilak was hoping to preserve a top-ten placing on the overall classification, but just missed by taking eleventh. The strong Slovenian rider will look to other goals for the season after a disappointing ride in in Italy. Špilak, winner of the 2015 Tour de Suisse, will have plenty more opportunities in the racing season to see satisfying results.

“I think our goal for a good GC result in Tirreno-Adriatico was lost in the first stage of the team time trial. We could not get back in a good way after losing time there and the overall result did not come out the way we had hoped. I think for the future it would serve us better to work hard on the TTT to set ourselves up for better results,” said team sports director Claudio Cozzi.

The final 10.05k flat stage 7 in San Benedetto del Tronto was won by Rohan Dennis of BMC at 3-seconds ahead of Jos van Emden of Team LottoNL-Jumbo. Michael Hepburn of Orica-Scott was third, also at three-seconds.

General Classification honors went to Nairo Quintana of Movistar Team. The Colombian rider took a solid 25-seconds to beat Dennis with another 11-seconds in hand to third place finisher Thibaut Pinot (FDJ).
