It was a moment of glory for Team KATUSHA’s Ilnur Zakarin at the individual time trial of the Russian National Championships in Voronezh. Four years after his first elite TT title, Zakarin was again the best rider. Second place was for another Team KATUSHA ALPECIN rider, Maxim Belkov, the 2005 champion. Third place was for Anton Vorobyev (Gazprom-RusVelo).
- I am really happy and honestly I did not expect to win the gold medal today. After the Giro d’Italia I took ten days rest, and I even gained some kilo’s. When I saw that, after 20 kilometers, I had already 20 seconds to Maxim, I decided to go for my second title. This is nice. Let’s see on Sunday what we can do for our team in the road race, said Ilnur Zakarin.
- It was good that Ilnur took some rest after the Giro. He was really tired and also too skinny. He gained some weight and that may have helped him to secure the title. He started fast and he finished fast. He did a perfect time trial on hilly and windy course, said team director Dmitry Konyshev.
In the end, Zakarin finished the 40,3 kilometer in 49 minutes and 38 seconds, 52 seconds faster than former European champion Maxim Belkov and 58 seconds ahead of Anton Vorobyev.
